Technology is a team sport

We’re a diverse bunch of geeks, united by a common goal — to help clinicians, patients, and everyone in the healthcare ecosystem see beyond.

Management Team

David J. Cuccia, Ph.D.

Chief Executive Officer | Chief Technical Officer

Modulim is a direct result of David’s undergraduate and doctoral work in biophotonics at UC Irvine. David is an internationally recognized pioneer and leader in the field of spatial frequency domain imaging, or SFDI. He secured over $11 million in SBIR/STTR grants that facilitated the development of our technology. David has nine patents with two more pending. His contributions to science include over 40 co-authored publications and more than 2000 citations in biomedical optics. Between new inventions — and playing his alto sax — David is a passionate UC Irvine Anteater fan who loves traveling, brewing beer, and learning new stuff.

Richard Oberreiter, J.D., M.B.A.

Chief Operating Officer

Richard loves start-ups and Modulim is his third such venture in medical devices. After graduating from UCLA, Richard was commissioned as a naval officer and served nine years on guided missile cruisers in the Pacific. After the Navy, Richard practiced law and later earned an M.B.A. from USC. He caught the start-up bug during the dot.com boom and has never looked back. He is not just a manager, but also is co-inventor on four US patents, and is involved in number of Orange County charities. If you ever need to know how Bruin football is going, just ask Richard — but make sure you don’t have any plans for an hour or two.

Mike Dutton

Chief Financial Officer

Mike spent 39 years at PwC, finishing his tenure as an assurance partner in the Private Company Services Group in Los Angeles, CA. He counseled clients in a wide variety of industries, including healthcare, technology, manufacturing, and retail. Let’s just say Mike knows corporate finance six ways from Sunday. A devoted Packers fan (he is from Wisconsin) and avid runner, Mike loves nothing more than visiting Munich with his German-born wife. Das ist wunderbar.

Amaan Mazhar, Ph.D.

Vice President, Research and Development

Amaan graduated from Rice University with a degree in Bioengineering and Managerial Studies. He subsequently earned a Ph.D. from UC Irvine, where SFDI was the subject of his research. Amaan is a preeminent expert in the field of SFDI, has co-authored over 20 journal publications, led the first clinical studies with SFDI, and has been the Principal Investigator for many of the company’s grants. A longtime fan of numbers, Amaan loves to talk baseball stats, especially when it comes to his beloved Astros.

Charles Gropper

Vice President, Engineering and Manufacturing

Charles has a passion for “bringing technology to life.” He has delivered over 20 new medical devices and dozens of product enhancements to various market segments, including pulmonology, cardiology, pre-natal care, and artificial organs with seven US patents. Equal parts engineer, entrepreneur, and seasoned executive, Charles is just as comfortable driving design and development in start-ups or mature organizations. With a passion for travel and lifelong learning, Charles has sampled some of the world’s finest whiskeys and is always happy to share.
