Modulim, the leader in point-of-care microvascular insights, was awarded a 2 year, $2.5M contract from the United States Army Medical Materiel Development Activity (USAMMDA) for the development of a handheld digital burn assessment tool. The proposed solution aims to change the way burn injuries are evaluated and managed, with significant implications for both military and civilian healthcare settings.
The contract, which was facilitated through the Medical Technology Enterprise Consortium (MTEC), reflects the military’s commitment to advancing medical solutions for troops and beyond. The handheld digital burn assessment tool, currently in the early stages of development by Modulim’s team of experts, will be designed to provide a portable and highly accurate means of assessing the severity of burn injuries, thus enabling faster and more effective treatment.
This innovative device will leverage Modulim’s proprietary optical spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) technology, which has a proven track record in the field of tissue health assessment. By capturing real-time data, the handheld tool will measure tissue oxygenation, perfusion, and other critical parameters to help medical professionals make informed decisions about burn care. Furthermore, it promises to reduce the need for invasive procedures and enhance patient outcomes through timely intervention.
“We are extremely grateful for the support and trust placed in us by the military with this contract,” said Dr. David Cuccia, CTO and Founder of Modulim. “Our team is dedicated to leveraging the strong foundation of peer-reviewed science and state-of-the-art advances in miniaturized optics and electronics to make a significant impact on the field of burn assessment and treatment. This contract will enable us to significantly accelerate toward that mission.”
The implications of this technology extend far beyond the military, as the same solution can have a substantial impact for management of burn patients in over 5000 emergency rooms and 120 national burn centers. By offering an efficient and non-invasive method for assessing burns, clinicians will not only save lives but also reduce healthcare costs and alleviate the burden on medical professionals.
Modulim has a history of driving innovation in the medical technology industry, with a strong commitment to saving lives by empowering healthcare teams with microvascular imaging and democratized data insights. With this latest military contract, the company will have the resources to advance the development of this groundbreaking tool, and to help ensure that it becomes an indispensable asset for healthcare providers, first responders, and military personnel.
