Executive Team

Charlie Huiner, M.B.A.

President,Chief Executive Officer

Charlie brings over 25 years of executive experience with a successful leadership track record in healthcare across multiple markets contributing to over $4B of successful exits across biotech, medical devices, and digital health. He is accomplished at developing and executing corporate growth strategies, securing financing, and building high-performing teams. Prior to joining Modulim, Charlie was the Chief Operating Officer and Senior VP, Corporate Development and Strategy for Sientra, Inc. (NASDAQ: SIEN), a global medical aesthetics company. During his tenure there, Charlie authored the Company’s growth strategy, led several transformative acquisitions, and helped raise $375 million in equity financing including a successful IPO. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at InTouch Health during a transformative period that solidified the Company’s market strategy and commercial model ahead of its eventual exit to Teladoc Health. He received his B.A. from Williams College, an M.B.A. in Finance and Marketing from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School, and currently serves as an independent board member of Recros Medica.

Amaan Mazhar, Ph.D.

Chief Product Officer

Amaan has degrees in Bioengineering, Managerial Studies, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, where combining SFDI with other modalities was the subject of his dissertation. He has led the R&D efforts at Modulim since 2011 and been the Principal Investigator for most of the company’s grants. Amaan has over 50 publications and several patents. In 2014, he was recognized as alumni of the year by the Rice Bioengineering Department for his contributions to the field of biophotonics. Amaan moved into the Chief Product Officer role at Modulim in 2020 and is committed to delivering technology solutions that will change clinical practice and improve patient lives.

Andre Grujovski, M.B.A.

Vice President, Marketing

Andre has over 15 years of marketing experience in the healthcare industry with a focus on delivering multi-channel integrated marketing strategies to drive adoption in emerging markets. Andre has a proven track record of bringing new products to market and positioning disruptive healthcare technologies for success by taking a customer-centric approach. His experience stems from over 17 years at InTouch Health (acquired by Teladoc Health 2020), where he helped build the marketing organization from startup, through growth, and into successful acquisition. Andre received a B.S.E. in Computer Engineering from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, and earned his M.B.A. from The Graziadio Business School at Pepperdine University.

David J. Cuccia, Ph.D.

Founder, Chief Technology Officer

Modulim was founded as a direct result of David’s dissertation work that resulted in the invention of SFDI. He has a B.S. in Physics and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from UC Irvine. David led Modulim’s funding raising of $21M in grant and private venture capital to bring SFDI to market. David’s contributions to science include over 100 co-authored publications and more than 4,000 citations in biomedical optics. In recognition of his work, David was inducted into the 2015 UC Irvine Engineering Hall of Fame and became a Senior Fellow for SPIE the International Society for Optical Engineers. David stepped into the full-time CTO role in 2020 to focus on his passion of expanding the technology pipeline and maximizing innovation to bring SFDI to the forefront of patient care.

Gary Marston, M.S.

Vice President, Sales

Gary has over two decades of cross-functional experience in the medical device industry with background in sales, sales training, marketing, operations, and market access. Gary has a proven track record of success in creating and executing strategies to produce significant growth by delivering clinical solutions that improve patient care. His experience ranges from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies, including Masimo, R2 Technology, Cholestech, and Eli Lilly. Gary received a B.S. in Chemistry and M.S. in Communications from the University of Redlands and holds three patents in the field of medication delivery.

Janelle Goulard, M.B.A.

Janelle has over 12 years’ healthcare experience working in private investments, scaling ventures, and management consulting. She has spent a large part of her career at GE Healthcare, in the US and Europe, working with both private and public health organizations. Janelle’s entrepreneurial endeavors include launching a population health technology platform that became a joint venture between GE and Microsoft. Janelle has an M.B.A. from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Commerce degree (B. Com) from McGill University.

Carl St. Bernard

President and CEO | CeloNova Biosciences

Carl is currently President and Chief Executive Officer and Board member of CeloNova Biosciences and has more than 25 years of experience in commercial leadership roles across a wide range of medical device and technology areas including medical imaging, endovascular, cardiovascular and vision. Prior to CeloNova, he served as President and CEO at Tryton Medical during a transformative period where he led the Company’s commercialization efforts of its coronary stent technology. Prior to Tryton, he spent approximately 16 years in various medical device divisions of GE Healthcare, Johnson & Johnson, and LifeCell in sales and marketing leadership roles. He holds a B.A. in Economics and Business Arts from Lafayette College and an M.B.A. from Pepperdine University. Carl also serves on the board of directors of Transverse Medical and AdvaMed.

David J. Cuccia, Ph.D.

An internationally recognized pioneer and leader in spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI), David secured over $11 million in SBIR/STTR grants that facilitated the development of Modulim’s technology. He has nine patents with two more pending. His contributions to science include over 100 co-authored publications and more than 4000 citations in biomedical optics. David earned a B.S in Physics and a Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of California, Irvine. 

Keith Bennett, Ph.D.

Advisor | Hamamatsu Photonics K.K.

Keith works with established and start-up companies to identify and create new business opportunities, with an emphasis on photonic technologies. Current and past clients include Hamamatsu Photonics, Ricoh, NTT Labs, the Japanese Science and Technology Agency, KLA-Tencor (now KLA), and several smaller firms. Prior to establishing his consulting practice, Keith worked in product management for Newport Corporation (now MKS) and Park Scientific Instruments (now Bruker), and co-founded Symphony Systems (now Pivotal Systems), a pioneering company in a field now termed “the internet of things.” He has degrees from M.I.T. (Physics, B.S.) and Stanford University (Applied Physics, M.S., and Ph.D.), and over 10 issued patents.
